Double Page Spread; Comparison

This is my Comparison Post for my DPS. I really liked the idea of having my text on one side and a close up image on the other. I also liked the idea of having one colour to represent the artist.
Rather than a normal masthead, I decided to use a pull quote from my article, this is different to Billboard's DPS as they just have a title that represents their artist. I decided to have a pull quote as the masthead as it intrigues to reader and grabs their attention and makes them want to read the article.

Double Page Spread; Update

I have succeeded in making my photo look professional and making sure that all white lines aren't visible and my editing isn't visible in a bad way.

Double Page Spread; Todays Agenda

Today, I am wanting to edit my dominant image and make sure the photoshop looks real and professional as I don't want it too look amateur. I am trying to get rid of the white edges and perfect the stray hairs around my models head.

Front Cover; Self Assessment

This is my self assessment for my Front Cover. I gave myself the grade B/C as I feel like I produced an appropriate material for the task and target audience. Furthermore, I used conventions that were understanding to the task and showed awareness for fonts, register and language.

Double Page Spread; Update

This is my double page spread so far, I really like it. I think the picture is suitable and I like the R (for Robyn) on the right hand page.

Double Page Spread; Todays Agenda

Today, I am wanting to start my Double Page Spread and make sure to get a little ahead as I am a lesson behind and I am wanting to finish my DPS on the deadline we have been given.

Contents Page; Comparison

This is my comparison post for my Contents Page. I really liked the idea of having a dominant image that stands out against a background then three sub images.
Although, the contents page from Billboard doesn't have an editors note, I decided to add one on mine to make it more unique and give it more individuality.

Furthermore, I added a colour coordinated key down one side to make it easier for the audience to find articles. I also added in a sell line under my main dominant image to intrigue the reader and encourage them to go to that article.

Contents Page; Peer Feedback

Double Page Spread; Flat Plans

Masthead; will be a pull quote from the Q&A article, I have decided to do this because it will catch the readers attention and make them want to read the article straight away. I am wanting to use two different colours for my masthead to make certain words stand out.
Dominant image; it will be a close up of my model so that the reader feels up close and personal to my artist. I think the image of my model really draws the attention to the kindness and happiness of the model. I will be erasing the background so that it has a plain white background, furthermore, my angle is eye level so that my model will have a direct mode of address and a large toothy smile to draw in the readers attention.
Mise-en-scene; My model has a piercing and a necklace with a shark tooth on, I have made sure to keep this in the shot to add to my models happy go lucky personality.
Colour scheme; I have decided to use pale pink and creams on my magazine as I think it links well with my models hair colour and clothing. Also, it matches my models sweet personality and her acoustic music.
My article is a Q&A article, I thought it would be best to do one of these as there isn't as much writing needed so it won't bore the reader, plus because my artist is 'new', it will allow the audience to get to know my artist.
Layout; the composition/layout of my page will look quite professional and tidy, this is due to having the image on one side and the article on the other. I decided to do this as I thought it linked well with my magazine genre.
Page numbers will be situated on the bottom corners of the pages like on my front cover and contents page, they will be in plain black so they are easy to find,

Contents Page; Update

I have completed what I wanted to do today, which was to complete my page key:) Although had difficulties trying to get the writing to stand out, I am happy with the outcome.

Contents Page; Todays Agenda

Today, I am wanting to finish my page key on the right hand side and make sure I have added all the articles my magazine will have inside.

Time Management - December

This is my schedule for December. It is quite busy but I am hoping to keep it up to date and add extra posts when I can.

November; Time Management Reflection

This is my November Time Management Reflection post. I did really well this month with keeping my work up to date, and adding in extra work to boost my mark (highlighted in green).  The extra work I added was to help with my evaluation later on in the course as I thought that by evaluating during making my magazine, it would help answer the evaluation questions at the end.

Contents Page; Update

I have deleted my sub images due to them not working well with my contents page. I have reduced the space use for my dominant image so I have more space for other information. I have included my page numbers and colour coordination key. Furthermore, I have added my issue number etc.

Contents Page; Todays Agenda

Today, I am hoping to get my essential information on my contents page and have the colour coordinated page number line situated on the page with all the articles shown with a sneak preview for each.

Contents Page; Progress on work

This is my work so far. I have added the masthead 'contents' in the same font as my front cover text and kept it black and made it bold to make it stand out. I have added a background to my dominant image; it is plain white but looks like a creased piece of cloth. I think this gives the contents page more texture to it and looks better. I have also included two sub images at the side of the dominant image to give the reader an insight on another artist as well as the main artist involved in the magazine. Furthermore, I have added the title of my magazine and placed it at the top right corner as it stands out there.

Tuesday, 18 November 2014

Contents Page; Flat Plan

Masthead; plain black and bold, this is so that it stands out. colour will be included so that it is easy on the eye but so that it still attracts a large variety of readers.
Sub Images; will be of other popular artists that relate to my target audience, this is so that it attracts more readers by having a variety of artists on the contents page.
Dominant Image; will be Of my main model which will preview in the DPS. There will be a handmade background behind this photo; An un-ironed sheet with lights. This is to add to the unusual and uniqueness of my magazine.
Other information and previews of what will be in the magazine; my articles will be colour coded (singles, albums, new artists and music videos with the colours blue, red, green and yellow) this will make it easier for the audience to find what they need. also this adds a bit more colour to my magazine and links with how many different genres are available.
Issue number etc; will be in one corner so that the reader knows where all essential information is. It will be in black writing so stands out but not too much.
Magazine name; will be included in the top right hand corner so that people know that this is definitely the magazine they are wanting to read
Page numbers; will be situated in the bottom right corner where it is easy to find.

Front Cover; Comparison

This is my comparison post for my front cover of my magazine. I have chosen to use the dominant image in the middle of the page so that it stands out to the audience. Furthermore, I have used a slug as I felt like this stands out and gives a bit more information to my audience without them actually reading anything else.

I have also used the bolder and bigger text for the main headline and kept the other sell lines at a smaller font. Although I have kept all my sell lines to one side so it looks more professional and neat.

Further Model Changes.

Model Changes.

I have decided to change my main model due to the photos I took not working well with the type of magazine, I realized the clothes worn were too dark and blended in too much with the background and masthead. I would of used the same model too re-take some more photos but because she is also doing Media, I didn't want to disturb her again so took it into my own hands to chose my Plan B model. I made sure to text my model to make sure she was still up for it and to give her all the details she needed.

The photos have turned out really well and are exactly how I want them. I still have the photos from my Plan A model and will be using some for my contents page to advertise other 'new upcoming artists'. I have chosen to do this as it means I didn't waste my models time and I am making the most of the photos I have taken.

Model Update; facial expressions and poses

Here is an update of my model, I got a text from my Model B asking about poses and facial expressions so I explained exactly what I needed from her.

Front Cover; Update

I have figured out my layout and I am quite happy with where each subhead etc will go. At the moment I am struggling with trying to put my main heading where I want it, I have completed my bar code and essential information and happy with where they are.

Front Cover; Today's Agenda.

Today, I am wanting to sort my layout out and get that to how I want it so that I don't have to worry about changing it drastically in my last lesson, next week.

Front Cover; Dominant Image Changes

I was struggling to pick a dominant image for my front cover and was going to choose the one on the left (holding the guitar up) but I wasn't able to zoom in enough without cutting off either a bit of the guitar or her feet. I would of left it how it was but with how far away she is, I felt like she seemed to distant from the audience so I have chosen to go with the photo on the right as it is at a perfect view.

Front Cover; Background Changes

I changed the colour of my background as it looked too dark and washed out what my model was wearing and parts of the guitar blended in too much with the background.

Wednesday, 5 November 2014

Todays Agenda (front cover update)

Today, I am planning to add the title to the front cover and find an appropriate background colour. Furthermore, I want to add subtitles and a slug onto the cover.

Progress on Front Cover

I am really proud of my progress so far, I really think the photo is suitable. At the moment I am still not sure whether I want the background that dark and my text needs to be lighter as it blends in with the background.

Front Cover; Flat Plan

Masthead; Black (with my chosen font) and bold. This is to ensure it stands out and is visible to the reader.
Main Headline; The main headline will be a different colour (red) to the rest of the sell lines (grey/blue/black). This is so that the reader knows that the specific colour represents the most important article within the magazine.
Dominant Image; The dominant image is the only image on my front cover. This is so it stands out to the audience and furthermore, my genre of magazine only has one image on the front cover. My model will have a direct mode of address and a teeth smile to engage the reader. Furthermore, she will have a guitar a a prop and it will be in front of her next to her side to show an equal importance. There will be no background as I will edit the image on photoshop to get rid of the background, the lighting I have used for the image is natural lighting so that it shows my models true beauty and I feel artificial lighting effect the models facial expression. The photo will be taken as a long shot and the camera angle will be somewhat eye level.
Sell Lines; the sell lines will be positioned down one side, this is because it looks a lot more professional rather than them scattered all over the front cover.
Bar Code and Essential Information; the bar code and other information will be situated at the left hand corner of the front cover. This is so that audience know where the price etc is and they don't have to look at other corners of the page to find every bit of essential information.
Pull Quote; I have added in a pull quote to engage the reader. The font colour will be the same as my main head line as it will be pulled straight of that article. I have chosen to do the same colour as people will instantly know that it is linked with that headline.
Slug; I have also added in a slug to further engage the reader and make them want to browse/ take a look at the magazine. This will be blue as I think it would stand out and draw attention to the sell lines which some will be blue.

Time Management - November

This is my schedule for November. I am hoping to be on schedule for this month and get as much extra work done as I can.

Update on Progress

So far I think I am achieving well with completing the tasks that need doing. Although I need to be better organised and manage my time better as I am running out of time do get everything finished.

I have been trying to keep myself organised by making drafts on blogger for the things that need uploading so they are there as a reminder. As for my time management, I need to keep to my schedules that I provide.

October; Time Management Reflection

This is my October Time Management Reflection. In comparison to last month, this month I had a very packed schedule; I uploaded one of my posts a day late (highlighted in red) but did manage to upload it as soon as I could. On the other hand, I did manage to upload an extra piece of work (highlighted in green) and was able to post some work a  few days earlier (highlighted in blue). Overall, apart from one late post, I managed to keep to my schedule while uploading extra posts.

Most and Least suitable fonts

The two least suitable fonts are there as they are unreadable for some audience members and are too over the top for my type of magazine.
My most suitable fonts are all easy too read and in bold so that it stands out. Although the very bottom font is suitable but looks a bit too childish for my magazine.

Font Ideas

Here are the eight fonts that I have chosen that I think may suit my magazine.

First Article Draft and Reflection

This was my first attempt at a double page spread, I did this before doing any research on double page spreads and looking at it now I can see why some viewers may not read it.
There is far too much text within the double page spread and not enough images. Especially with the type of magazine I am doing, they usually have a dominant image on one side and a chunk of text/an interview on the other page. Although I have included all the essential information I need and have added in a pull quote to draw attention to the double page spread, I could also add in a slug at the top of the page to draw even more attention to the page.

By looking back on this double page spread, I have learnt a lot more about how to layout the pages and not to over crowd it with a lot of information as it may bore the readers.

Feedback on Photoshop Task

Photoshop Task

Here is my first attempt at a magazine front cover, using photoshop. I took a look at other Billboard magazine front covers and tried to add certain essential information that they include. Along with adding the 'free poster' advertisement. I kept with one dominant image, like they do with most of theirs and added sub headlines around the image. The main headline is larger than the rest and crosses over the picture, making it stand out.

Outfit Ideas for Photoshoot

Follow Rhiain's board Outfits (As Media) on Pinterest.

The outfit my model will wear will be; black dress, boots and flannel. This is because my model is most comfortable in this, it shows off her fashionable side and relates to the type of music that my model makes.

Make-Up Ideas for Photoshoot

Follow Rhiain's board Make-Up (Media Studies) on Pinterest.

The type of make-up my model will wear is dark, smokey eyes with eyeliner and natural lips and face. This is because her music is sort of rocky but not completely rock so I won't be going heavy with the black tones and instead adding in silvers to make it less harsh.

Hairstyle Ideas for Photoshoot

Follow Rhiain's board Hairstyles (AS Media Studies) on Pinterest.

My models hairstyle will be down (pixie cut) yet slightly messy. This is because it gives off a relaxed feel and doesn't make the artist look too professional.

Location Scout

Suitable; I thought that this location was quite unique and matched my model/artists personality and went well with their genre of music.
Not Suitable; The location was not suitable because of some of the backgrounds, it didn't link well with a music magazine and the green/brown colours clashed with some of the colours I wanted for my magazine.
Target Audience and genre; I feel as though the location suited my target audience and genre as it is unique and something different in each area which links well with the different types of music that will be previewed within my magazine.

The Recce

Model Planning

I text my first model to make sure she was able to do the photoshoot when I wanted to do it. When she said she would do the photoshoot. I sent her all the details she needed to know and made sure she could ask any questions if she had any concerns or queries.

I then text my back up model. This was to make sure they I had a Plan B model, just in case my Model A doesn't go to plan.

Magazine Competitors

I researched into other magazines that were similar to my own, to discover who I would be competing against.

Time Management - October

This is my schedule for October. Again, I hope to keep up to date and post updates when I have said I am going to.
